PRESTONPANS POTTERY. A Definitive Study of Scotland's Heritage
- Cruikshank G. 2007. 290 pages. 260 colour illustrations &
131 black & white. Hardback. In dust wrapper. In stock . A new and well researched work on the various Potteries, Potters and their families and the wares produced during the 18th,19th and 20th centuries. Prestonpans was the pre-eminent manufacturer of pottery in Scotland under the leadership of the Cadells, Gordons and Watsons. It was the town's major employer. These traditions continued with Charles Belfield & Sons right up until the 1930s, and lived again in the late 20th century with Dorothy Clyde. Graham Cruickshank a respected authority on Scottish pottery has produced a detailed and well illustrated work on the history of these potteries and the creamware, saltglazed, tortoise-shell, majolica, transfer printed and other wares produced in the Prestonpans area. He also examines the earlier standard on scottish pottery by Fleming and the chapters therein relating to Prestonpans and provides fresh documentary evidence throughout this important contribution to Scottish pottery and its history |

THE EWERS-TYNE COLLECTION of WORCESTER PORCELAIN at CHEEKWOOD - Sandon J. 2008. 224 pages. 304 colour & 13
b/w illustrations. Hardback. £ 35.00 This catalogue of the Ewers-Tyne Collection housed in the gorgeous setting of Cheekwood in Nashville, Tennessee, provides lovers of fine porcelain with a very special opportunity. This is the first time that all three centuries of Worcester porcelain have been presented together in a single book. The earliest pieces at Cheekwood date from the middle of the eighteenth century containing special pieces from famous services, some painted in the Giles workshop in London. Split into two separate factories during the Regency period, the Flight family ran the original Worcester works in partnership with the Barrs. Meanwhile the Chamberlain family set up a rival factory across the city. Many masterpieces from the early nineteenth century are in the Ewers-Tyne Collection, including specimens from some of the finest armorial services finished off with sumptuous gilding. The Victorian period of Royal Worcester is represented at Cheekwood by the incredible figures of James Hadley and Thomas Brock, while painted porcelain by senior artists show how the traditions of fine craftsmanship continued into the twentieth century. Henry and John Sandon are the leading authorities on Worcester porcelain and their informative text accompanies clear colour illustrations of every piece. |

Samuel T. Freeman & Co. U.S.A. 1917. 102 pages. 12 pages
of b/w plates. 690 lots. Plus 1 plate of the author.Soft. A very
good copy of this scarce sale. The collection of the pioneering ceramics scholar Edwin Atlee Barber who died in 1916. His collecting interests were wide and various as reflected in his books and articles and this sale. His collection was with the Pennsylvania Museum from1894 but they were unable to raise funds to keep it and so this sale took place. Containing British, European, Oriental and American ceramics as collected by Mr. Barber and used in his numerous reference books on these subjects. The catalogue is compiled from a manuscript left by Mr. Barber. Wares from Worcester porcelain, delftware, slipware, saltglaze, early Tucker porcelain of the 1830's and much more. DICTIONARY of CERAMIC ARTISTS - Wilkinson
V. 2007. Privately published. IN STOCK TODAY. 208 pages. 60 colour illustrations & 300 black
& white illustrations. Hardback. Advance orders taken
payment on publication. This new title provides a wealth of new information particularly on artists, gilders and modellers of the 1830 to 1930 period. The illustrations are fresh and again mostly of the later periods and the author thankfully does not tread the well worn path of providing illustrations of the famous few artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Vega has had access to the Minton archives for some time, and a lot of important information was gleaned from this source along with information on artists from Royal Doulton, Royal Worcester, Coalport etc. etc. etc. Some errors have been noted in the entries for pre-1820 artists and again demonstrates that this work is not for those mainly looking for further information on the Billingsley's or the Pardoe's of the ceramic world. The section on Outside Decorators and Retailers is particularly welcome and has its own introduction as does the section on artists and Book Illustrators Used as Source Material by ceramic painters. |

STUDIO POTTERY IN BRITAIN - Jones
J. Publishing . 2007.256 pages. 200 colour illustrations. Hardback.
Wrapper Jeffrey Jones examines the changing ways that pottery has been perceived by the press and the public and discusses the differing approaches to the craft, such as production throwing, the making of individual pieces, shapes and forms and types of decoration. A variety of sources are presented as evidence, including pottery sales tickets, catalogues, art journals, photographs, letters and recipe books. The book takes us effortlessly through each stage of the evolution of Studio pottery blending sharp and large colour photo's of pots with archive material to good effect. The well known and influential potters and firms are found from Vyse, Martin Brothers, Leach, Cardew, Coper, Crowan, Ravenscroft, Haile, Ewenny, Casson etc. But mixed with the work of others less known and with a liberal sprinkling of current potters and their work of the last 10 years. What at first glance appears to be a pictorial guide to 100 years of studio pottery offers much more and will, I'm sure, soon be hailed as a standard work on the subject. |

The Origin and Devolpment of BOW PORCELAIN 1730-1747 including

American Contribution- Daniels P.
2007. 364 pages. 48 colour & 51 b/w illust. Hardback.d/w.
Only 350 copies printed. IN STOCK. Evidence gathered for this book and used alongside scientific analysis has enabled the author to identify a number of things including the following :- 1) The creation of the Bow Factory as part of a wider scheme conceived in 1727 2) The people responsible for the sophisticated technology essential to the development of the various porcelain recipes at Bow. 3) The manufacturing periods of the different types including the "A" marked group. 4) The part played by fellows of the Royal Society 5) The forty year career of Andrew Duche as agent/supplier of Cherokee china clay to Bow, Bovey Tracey and Bonnin and Morris 6) Personalities modelled in Bow porcelain prior to 1747 and the source of the artistic input. Pat Daniels has been studying 18th century porcelain for over 40 years and traded as Parkside Antiques, a well known Melbourne firm of porcelain specialists. She returned to England in 1996 to study and research the early years of Bow porcelain production. Many parts of this book make for captivating reading as the analysis and discovery of documents lead to further detective work to unravel the true history of the period. The book reveals and proposes much more than mentioned above and makes for both thought provoking and enjoyable reading and undoubtedly leads the way for further argument and research. Essential reading for everyone interested in 18th century English porcelain. |
