THE POTTERY OF SOUTH WALES - Grant-Davidson
W.J. Consultant Editor Oliver Fairclough. Original forward by
Donald Towner. Summer 2010. Limited
& numbered edition of 300 numbered copies. 590 pages. 240 colour illustrations and 100 black
& white. Hardback.d/w. PUBLICATION
END of AUGUST 2010 It is with great pleasure we announce the forthcoming publication on Welsh pottery by Wallace Grant-Davidson. Many of our customers will remember when we offered Grant's reference library for sale in 1999 and mentioned in the forward our hopes that this work would eventually be published. Grant's late wife Margaret was determined to see it published and thanks to the tireless efforts and contributions from their many friends and associates the task is almost complete. Most of Grant's original photographs were in black & white and needed to be retaken in colour and the monumental task of tracking the original pieces or slides of the pieces down took some considerable time and effort. Oliver Fairclough of the National Museum of Wales spent 3 years compiling two manuscripts, extended plate captions, Grants additional notes and corrections, notes from Donald Towner etc. No attempt was made to update the text based on discoveries since Grant's final notes but reference is made to several important publications since Grant laid aside his pen for the final time. Margaret Grant-Davidson's friend and executor Maria Stanley has been the driving force behind most of the later work that has gone into this publication and great credit is due to her for her tireless efforts. Much of Grant's writing is still relevant and of importance today to anyone interested in Welsh Pottery and his lost masterpiece will finally fill the missing chapter in Welsh ceramic research. Telephone or Email us for a full information leaflet and advance order form. We are the only stockist of this publication worldwide. There will be only one edition of 300 copies and it will not be available from any other source. We guarantee the book will not be reduced in price or be available from any other online bookseller or bookshop at a lower price. |

DUTCH DELFTWARE. Facing East; Oriental Sources for Dutch Delftware
Chinoiserie Figures & Highlights from the Visser & Stigter-Gysberti
collection - Aronson R.D. & Lambooy
S.M.R. 2010. 160 pages. 190 colour illustrations & 30 b/w
illustrations. Hard back. d/w.Fine. Besides direct imitations of shapes and patterns, the Delft potters had a great influence on the European fashion for chinoiseries. In recent years there has been a growing interest in uncovering the origins of Chinese patterns and shapes of Dutch Delftware. The rare and little known Delft figures of Chinese men, women, deities, and animals, illustrate that besides prototypes of blanc de Chine, porcelain from the Kangxi period, and export porcelain from the Qianlong period, Þgures carved from soapstone and ivory, and even bronzes could also have been models for Delft chinoiserie Þgures. Numerous figures of Immortals and Chinese ladies are illustrated and discussed as are the milk jugs shaped as monkeys, duck tureens and parrots. Apart from the Chinoiserie styled delftware there are illustrated and described many other items such as the 12 blue & white herring fishery dishes, 12 whaling plates, figures of pilgrims and seated dogs and a triple sphere money box. With 130 years of dealing in and researching Dutch Delftware the Aronson family business is now run by Robert Aronson who is co-author of this publication. |

COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE. THE PATRICIA & RODES HART COLLECTION
- Birte Abraham 2010. 206 pages. 100
colour plates. 10 colour illustrations & 28 b/w illustrations
Hardback. d/w. The actors of the Commedia dell' Arte, the Italian Comedy, became widely known in Italy in the 16th century through improvised theatre productions. Troups of Italian actors soon performed in Vienna, South Germany as well as France and Spain. The characters in these plays were recognisable by their make-up, their costumes and mannerisms which remained unchanged for generations. The comedians of these plays were immortalised in the fine porcelain models of Meissen, Hochst, Frankenthal, Ludwigsburg, Vienna, Bow and other manufactures. The 97 figures and related objects of Pantalone, Harlequins, Scaramouche and others from the Rodes Hart collection are depicted in full colour plates along with detailed descriptions, graphic sources and provenance. |

A. & E. KEELING. Formerly Factory X
- Barratt J. 2010. 142 pages. 960 colour illustrations. Softback
covers. The name of Keeling has been known for some time but marks bearing this name are few and far between. Two marks have been recorded one from a service discovered in 1961 by Geoffrey Godden and another in 2001 by Michael Berthoud. The author, Jean Barratt, now has the 1961 example in her collection. These factory X pieces bear a strong resemblance to New Hall hard paste wares and Jean has spent 10 years researching these porcelains and produced this illustrated pattern book. Half the illustrations come from Michael Berthoud's and Geoffrey Godden's extensive collections and the remainder provided by Jean in her 10 year study. The patterns and shapes in this book date from around 1784 to 1807. |

| RS1178) WILLIAM GREATBATCH. A Staffordshire Potter.
Barker D. 1991 280 pages. 230 b/w & 16 colour plates. Hardback
d/w. Very good copy In 1979 the chance discovery of a potter's waste tip in Fenton , Stoke-on-Trent, led to a major excavation and the recovery of many tons of ceramic wasters discarded from a nearby factory. The tip and the pottery from it, have been positively attributed to William Greatbatch and span the whole twenty year period during which he was in business. Here for the first time, we are able to see the products of a single 18th century factory in their entirety and the excavated pottery now forms the most complete record of the products of any 18th century potter. The re-attribution of creamware, saltglaze, basalt, agate wares, printed wares, underglaze blue painted wares etc. once thought to be the products of Leeds, Whieldon and Wedgwood form but a part of this intriguing story. A crucial publication based on years of research following excavations on the Greatbatch site. David Barker, who directed these excavations, has written an authoritative and absorbing book. |

The forward by Francis King, who has stayed at the house of the unnamed collector, intimates the size and scale of the collection when he says " One of the hazards of these weekends is that, to reach the guest bathroom from the guest bedroom it is necessary to pass through a room crowded with objects. The shelves in the bathroom itself are loaded with glassware, in many cases by Galle and Lalique. Because of my age, I often make that journey from bedroom to bathroom with extreme urgency and in a semi-somnolent state." |

214 black & white illustrations & 28 tipped in full page
colour plates. Hardback. d/w. Large format. Card slipcase. Very
good. Madame de Guillebon spent some 20 years researching the Porcelain of Paris and in the preceding years published several articles on the subject. The first ( and arguably the best ) publication on the 18th and 19th century hard-paste porcelains manufactured and decorated in factories situated in Paris. The 19th century manufacturers and decorators of wares were subject to great economic upheavals and changes in the laws regarding imports and exports etc and the book covers the period up to 1850 in great detail. Madame de Guillebon's researches provide a vast amount of information in the text regarding the economic climate of the time, financial information on costs, loans and wages, the workers and movements of the owners of these factories and decorating studios. Well illustrated and with pages of original base marks this is with out doubt a standard work on the the subject. |
