GEOFFREY GODDEN |
EIGHTEENTH CENTURY
ENGLISH PORCELAIN
A SELECTION
FROM THE GODDEN REFERENCE COLLECTION
Geoffrey Godden FRSA
An Update
Geoffrey Godden has contributed
the following comments and updating, regarding his relatively
little-known but novel reference book in which he selected three
interesting pieces from some thirty-five different types of eighteenth
century English porcelain that were originally included in his
unique reference collection on display at his former Worthing
gallery.
Most of the pieces featured in this well-illustrated book are
now on long loan to the Potteries Museum at Hanley. These pieces
are therefore now available for students to see and handle -
by prior appointment with the museum authorities. Now that Geoffrey
Godden has retired from the antique trade his reference collection
is no longer available at Worthing, although this book forms
a permanent record of many examples and relates the circumstance
and reason for their purchase.
As Geoffrey states in his introduction to this 1985 book:-
"The reasons for my choice will be various; key pieces that
are especially instructive or helpful in identifying other products
of that factory; pieces that are highly typical of their type
or, more importantly, porcelains that give me great pleasure.
Examples will certainly not be chosen merely because they are
fashionable, or rare, or valuable, or in mint state."
Now the author adds some
important updates or revised attributions to the illustrations
in this very personal book, copies of which we can still supply
at the attractive price of £30.
